Tips for Parents: Babies Like Plush Toys with Eyes

Have you ever noticed that showing random facial expression to your baby often makes him or her laugh, while in other games she or he just blankly stares at you. This is a shared characteristic of babies, which was verified by Dr. Brooks, from the University of Washington, that is, babies like to make eye contact with people, or any plush toy with a pair of eyes on it.

In fact, babies are hard to participate in the game with adults or plush toys in their first few months. As they growing up, their communication ability will improve from imitating adults. And they will turn their observation into an understanding of the connection between men and plush toys. Therefore, you will see that plush dolls and toys are more attractive to babies because they have eyes.

Another question popped into Dr. Brooks' mind when he was examining his presumption: Is the movement of eyes or the rotation of head that babies imitate? So he did another test, which discovered that most of the time, babies won't imitate the person unless he turns his head with his eyes open. The reason is that they will only follow your sight line. Those little guys will just stare at you rather than imitate you if your eyes are closed.

The test indeed verified that the attention of baby depends on the eyes of adult, since eyes are more sensitive and better able to convey information than head rotation. Based on this experimental result, you can get some toys with eyes like plush dolls to attract your baby's attention so as to get better at communicating and playing with him or her.
